Kakuhu Tarot™
A Borikén Taíno-Guided Tarot Deck
Seventy-eight cards rooted entirely in Borikén. Every deity, glyph, plant, creature and place is ours, read through the beliefs of our Taíno ancestors.Made by a Boricua, for Boricuas, on the island and across the diaspora, and fo all who love Puerto Rico.
Kakuhu (kah-KOO-hoo) is vida, life. Our Taíno ancestors saw the world as connected: duty, reciprocity and a living bond with everything, whether it breathed or not. Those beliefs run through all 78 cards.Kakuhu Tarot™ reinterprets traditional tarot with Taíno beliefs, culture, and philosophy, rooted in resilience and resistance. The Major Arcana carry the great forces of Taíno life. The four suits, Cemís, Vasijas, Cobos and Yucas, carry the everyday world our ancestors knew. Cemís is Fire (Wands), Vasijas is Water (Cups), Cobos is Air (Swords), and Yucas is Earth (Pentacles). Jimaí is Page, Nitaíno is Knight, Cacica is Queen, and Cacique is King.Every deity, place, plant and animal is of Borikén. For our ancestors, resilience and resistance were never two separate things, and this deck carries both.
The displacement of Puerto Ricans is centuries long, but I, and many of us, fear it is accelerating. This gentrification is causing a cultural erasure and commercialization of Puerto Rican identity. My genealogy work and this deck come from the same place, the fear of losing our culture and our history. Tracing our roots is an act of resilience and resistance.I use tarot for guidance, and in this moment in time I wanted a tarot deck that I felt connected to, both culturally and spiritually, and grounded in resilience and resistance. Our first ancestors, the Taíno, capture this need. They endured. They protected. They fought back. For our ancestors, holding on to their way of life was how they fought back. And here we are 500 years later, still fighting.Kakuhu Tarot™ will ground you in your ancestors ways.
